VIII. Assessment

This project was a work in progress for most of the term. We had a vision and stumbled toward it, shifting course along the way to accommodate student needs and desires. While our focus was Language Arts and the students were regularly reading, writing and thinking, the course also had clear elements of Global Studies and History that could have been expanded with more time and forethought. This curriculum would be ideal in a cross-curricular environment.

We used student evaluations; and portfolio reviews to mark student progress for grading purposes. Assessment was collaborative and on-going, using oral and written modes of evaluation. The students kept a portfolio of their work that was graded at the end of each quarter. We asked students to write a letter to the teachers documenting their personal learning and growth throughout the quarter as the final reflective assignment.
