At the CES Northwest Service Learning Network, we have adopted The Principles of Effective Service Learning to guide our work and describe what should be found in each service-learning project.

Rigorous Learning
The service-learning project has clearly articulated learning goals that arise from broader classroom, school, or district goals.

Meaningful Service
The service is in response to an authentic community need.

Reflection
Occurs before, during, and after service experiences.

Civic Responsibility
By participating in the service-learning project, students understand how they can make positive civic contributions and participate as active citizens.

Youth Voice
Student thinking and ideas are integrated into the service-learning projects.

Reciprocal Partnerships
All partners benefit from the project and contribute to its planning.

Progress Monitoring/Evaluation
Data measures progress toward the learning and service goals of the project.

Duration
Best practices research suggests service experiences are equal to one semester.

The principles are adapted from the National K-12 Standards for Quality Service Learning Practice.
