How does Service-Learning compliment the Washington State's School Reform Efforts?

Service-Learning is an effective way to implement the guiding principles of ESHB1209, which mandates that Washington State provide students the opportunity to "...become responsible citizens, to contribute to their own economic well-being and that of their families and communities."

In addition, service-learning can provide an authentic setting for applying the Essential Learnings that are beingdeveloped by the Commission. Service projects provide natural opportunities for problem solving, using technology and developing core Essential Learnings. Many schools are also using service projects as a strong component of their classroom-based assessment activities.

"What is needed is not a new form of school, not more of the same only better, but a new form of schooling-a form of community life in which living, working and learning are united." John Abbott
