How Youth are Promoting Service

Some schools incorporate service into their athletic team programs, clubs or Associated Student Body (ASB). The following are just a few of the many creative ways schools are getting their students involved.

Bulletin Board
In some schools there is a bulletin board that has photographs of students who are involved in different service projects and that highlights the needs and opportunities that are currently available.

ASB Funds
Some schools require that any club that is receiving ASB funds must give back in some way to its school or community as a way of compensating for the support they are receiving.

Service Officer
Port Townsend High School has an officer who coordinates community service projects for the school. He contacts the community and identifies possible projects and organizes them so that students can easily get involved.

Volunteer Fair
Several schools in Washington sponsor a Volunteer Fair on their campuses. Various agencies provide displays, and students visit the "fair" during a set period of the day to ask questions and to sign up to volunteer.

Volunteer Clearinghouse
Some schools have a directory of all the service opportunities available. This directory is frequently updated, and some students volunteer to operate the center.

Serve-A-Thon
On one day, hundreds of students are involved in service projects throughout the community. The projects might be coordinated by various service clubs or organizations, and students are recruited to donate their time-helping to rehabilitate houses, gardening, restoring streams, cooking meals for the hungry, and painting houses for the elderly.

Team Service
A number of coaches are finding that service is a powerful vehicle for building strong teams and for developing leadership skills. The football team at Cascade High School in Everett has developed a buddy program which matches players with young children. Members of the Gig Harbor High School football team used to visit local convalescent centers to watch Monday Night Football.
